Q. How often do I need to have my sprinkler system tested?
A. All wet systems are required to be tested annually per NFPA 25 (Chapter 13) 2007 Edition. Main drains and valves are to be tested annually, but other system components are required to be tested quarterly and semi-annually.
Q. The batteries in my fire control panel are more than 6 years old, are they compliant?
A. No, per NFPA 72 (Table 10.4.4.6.d.1) 2007 Edition, Sealed lead acid batteries must be replaced within 5 yrs after manufacture or more frequently as needed.
Q. I have a fire extinguisher dated 1982 that has been depleted of its
contents, can you recharge it for me?
A. No, per NFPA 10 (section 4.4.1) 2010 Edition, Dry chemical stored-pressure
extinguishers manufactured prior to October 1984 shall be removed from service
at the next 6yr maintenance interval or the next hydrotest, whichever comes first.
Q. Am I required to test my emergency/exit lights?
A. Yes, per NFPA 101, Emergency/Exit lights must be tested monthly and one
annual test is required as well. The monthly test consists of a 30 second load
test and the annual for 90 minutes or equivalent.
Q. What is the height requirement of a manual pull station?
A. Per NFPA 72 (section 5.13.4) 2007 Edition, The operable part of each manual fire alarm box shall be not less than 3 1/2 feet and not more than 4 1/2 feet above floor level.
Q. If a sprinkler head breaks in my office, will they all spray water?
A. No, sprinkler heads activate on an individual basis unless you have an open head system (deluge).
Q. Are there height requirements for my 10 lb fire extinguishers?
A. Yes, per NFPA 10 (section 6.1.3.8) 2010 Edition, Extinguishers under 40 lb shall be installed so that the top of the extinguisher is no more than 5 ft above the floor and clearance between the bottom and the floor shall not be less than 4in.
